The need

Facilitating country-led scale up with practical guidance and resources.

Globally, over a third of pregnant women are affected by anaemia, and the world is off track to achieving the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. Scaling up antenatal MMS as part of preventative care presents an opportunity to accelerate progress towards global and national targets for anaemia, low birthweight and stunting.

Our solution

Working with governments for effective MMS implementation and SMART scale up.

Following global guidance, we continue to provide expert support to governments around the world in advancing their maternal and newborn health and nutrition initiatives. Our work to introduce, maintain and sustain MMS includes:

  • Providing technical and operational support to strengthen the health system (policy, product, financing and delivery systems) to be able to deliver and monitor MMS for the long-term as part of comprehensive maternal nutrition services
  • Conducting implementation science to identify, investigate and customize solutions, strategies and approaches to support the sustainable scale up and optimize uptake and adherence of MMS among pregnant women
  • Working alongside national governments to adapt a suite of evidence-based practical resources, tools and approaches to the local context to support country-led scale up
  • Contributing to global guidelines, policy, regulatory frameworks and tools that support maternal and newborn health and nutrition

MMS in action

Women at the centre of implementation research design.

Nutrition International has been working alongside the Government of Pakistan to conduct implementation research using human centered design to understand how to best replace IFAS with MMS. Since 2022, pregnant women in Swabi district have been provided with MMS supplements. Watch the journey as a pregnant woman goes for an antenatal check-up at a primary health centre.
