Overview

This paper reviewed large-scale food fortification and biofortification programs in low- and middle-income countries, including their efficacy and challenges to implementation.

A literature review of articles and reports published between 2000 and 2017 was undertaken.

The piece concludes that large-scale food fortification and biofortification are cost-effective interventions to reduce micronutrient deficiencies in target populations, however a number of challenges, including need for continued monitoring, improving coverage and quality of delivery, must be overcome to see greatest continued impact.
