Ottawa, CANADA – Nutrition International is pleased to announce that Joseph Wong and Rod Phillips have joined its Board of Directors. Together, they bring a wealth of expertise in public policy, global health, governance and international development — strengthening the organization’s capacity to deliver lasting impact in the fight against malnutrition.

“We are thrilled to welcome Joseph and Rod to Nutrition International’s Board of Directors,” said Sir Masood Ahmed, Chair of the Board for Nutrition International and President Emeritus, Center for Global Development, Washington, DC, USA. “Joseph’s deep expertise in health policy and development research, and Rod’s broad leadership across government, business and community service, make them outstanding additions to our board.”

Joseph Wong is a professor of Political Science and Vice-President, International at the University of Toronto, where he is also a faculty member at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy. He previously held the Canada Research Chair in Health, Democracy, and Development and the Roz and Ralph Halbert Professorship of Innovation at the Munk School. His academic work — published in leading journals including the Lancet and the Bulletin of the World Health Organization, and by Cornell, Princeton, and other leading university presses — spans health policy, democracy, and development across Asia, Africa, the Americas and Europe. He is the founder of the Reach Alliance, a research initiative at the Munk School that examines how development interventions reach the world’s most hard-to-reach populations, and co-founder of the Global Ideas Institute.

“I am honoured to join Nutrition International’s Board of Directors,” said Joseph Wong. “Access to adequate nutrition is one of the most fundamental determinants of human development and wellbeing. I look forward to contributing to the organization’s vital work and helping to advance equitable, evidence-based solutions for those who need them most.”

Rod Phillips is a business and public policy leader with extensive experience across the private sector, government and community service. He currently serves as Vice-Chair of Canaccord Genuity Corporation, Chair of Toronto Global and Petal Health, and sits on the board of Aecon Group Inc. Elected in 2018 as Member of Provincial Parliament for Ajax, Rod served in the Ontario Legislature as Minister of Finance, Minister of Long-Term Care, and Minister of Environment, Conservation and Parks. Prior to public life, he was President and CEO of the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) and of Morneau-Shepell (Lifeworks) and has held board leadership roles at Postmedia Network Canada Corp., Afiniti, and several other public and private companies. A lifelong community volunteer, Rod has supported organizations focused on civic development, medical and life sciences and mental health.

“I am delighted to join such a dedicated and high-impact organization,” said Rod Phillips. “Nutrition International’s work to combat malnutrition, particularly among women, girls and children, is both urgent and inspiring. I look forward to working with my fellow board members and the team to further this important mission.”

“Joseph’s pioneering research on hard-to-reach populations speaks directly to Nutrition International’s mission, and Rod brings a rare combination of business insight, government experience, and community leadership that will be invaluable to us,” said Joel Spicer, President and CEO, Nutrition International. “Together, they strengthen our board at a pivotal moment — Joseph’s global networks and deep commitment to equity and innovation, alongside Rod’s understanding of policy, institutions, and government, will help us expand our reach and deepen our impact.”
