Overview: Existing context and the need to generate evidence of the impact of large-scale food fortification on the prevalence of anaemia
Overview
Anaemia remains a pressing global public health challenge, disproportionately affecting women and children. Beyond its health consequences — adverse maternal and child outcomes, impaired cognitive and motor development in children, and reduced work capacity in adults — anaemia can slow a nation’s economic progress. Tackling this challenge requires scaling up proven, evidence-based interventions that reach both broad populations and high-risk groups. Large-scale food fortification (LSFF), the addition of essential micronutrients to commonly consumed staple foods, has proven to be a highly effective strategy for reducing anaemia caused by nutritional deficiencies.
This resource highlights the impact of LSFF in combatting anaemia and provides practical guidance, tools and resources to help stakeholders design, implement and sustain effective fortification programs.
