An egg a day enhances growth in resource-poor communities
Overview
This randomized controlled trial investigated the therapeutic efficacy of a daily supplemental egg, compared with usual diet, on enhancing growth among children in resource-poor communities.
This study was conducted in five rural parishes of the Cotopaxi Province in Ecuador with mother (caregiver) – infant pairs. Healthy infants (6-9 months old) were given one egg a day for 6 months in the intervention group. Linear and mass growth were measured.
Results showed that there was a reduced prevalence of stunting by 47% and underweight by 74%. This suggests that daily egg ingestion in resource poor areas enhances growth.
