Overview

This project brief introduces Surakshit Matritva ki Taiyyari (SUMATI), a five-year initiative led by Nutrition International in partnership with the state governments of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra to demonstrate how comprehensive pre-pregnancy nutrition and care can be integrated into routine public health systems. It addresses risks such as anaemia, underweight, hypertension and high blood sugar, while strengthening women’s access to information and services that support healthier pregnancies.

SUMATI combines health screening and management, nutrition interventions, psychosocial support, family engagement, as well as WASH and menstrual health services, alongside efforts to strengthen health systems and frontline worker capacity. Expected to reach more than 300,000 women, the project will generate evidence to inform the scale-up and integration of pre-pregnancy nutrition and care across India.
