Developing Pilot Interventions to Address Food Insecurity and Nutritional Needs of People Living with HIV in Latin America and the Caribbean: An Interinstitutional Approach Using Formative Research
Overview
The objective of this study is to uncover the status of food insecurity and malnutrition in people living with HIV (PLHIV) in some Latin American and Caribbean countries to provide evidence for future projects and policy.
Sociodemographic, household food security, anthropometric, and commonly consumed food data was collected and used for pilot projects.
The data showed that many PLHIV were moderately or severely household food insecure, overweight, obesity and high body fat were also prevalent. Pilot projects derived from this data were aided by local nutrition counselling, a monthly food ration, opportunities to increase income, or urban gardens.
