Nutrition International and UNICEF Kenya have collaborated to help Kenya develop guidelines for securing and implementing breastfeeding-friendly environments in all work places.
This follows the proclamation of Kenya’s Health Act, 2017, signed into law by the president in June, which requires Kenya to address the health needs of vulnerable groups and mandates the provision of emergency and specialized care. In addition to providing workplace breastfeeding facilities, the law also progressively ensures the provision of free maternity care and vaccinations for under-five children.
Nutrition International and UNICEF Kenya provided financial and technical support to the Ministry of Health, Nutrition and Dietetics, by organizing two workshops to develop and finalize the workplace breastfeeding guidelines and implementation framework. These workshops brought together over 40 participants, including government ministries, trade unions, partners and private stakeholders. From Nutrition International, Suzanne Mboya, Senior Program Officer, Infant and Young Child and Nutrition and Jane Kithuka, Advocacy and Communications Officer, were present.
Workshop attendees also developed an advocacy and orientation package and to inform and sensitize workplaces.
All guidelines, advocacy packages as well as the implementation framework will be printed and disseminated at both a national and country-level.
