Ten inspiring global nutrition stories
As 2024 comes to a close, we're showcasing ten of our milestone moments that represent the work we do around the world to improve the nutrition of women, girls and children.
Partnership saves children’s lives with zinc treatments
Zinc Alliance for Child Health provides financial and technical support to scale up zinc and LO-ORS treatment in countries that have high numbers of children dying from childhood diarrhoeal diseases.
Zinc and LO-ORS
Diarrhoea is a leading killer of children under five, claiming the lives of more than half a million children annually.
Zinc and low-osmolarity rehydration salts (LO-ORS) is the World Health Organization’s recommended treatment for childhood diarrhoea. When provided together, zinc and LO‑ORS help children recover faster from diarrhoeal episodes and prevent diarrhoea-related deaths.
Collaborating to scale up diarrhoea treatments
Zinc
The Zinc Alliance for Child Health (ZACH) is a public-private-civil society partnership with Global Affairs Canada, Teck Resources and Nutrition International. A successful development investment model, ZACH provides financial and technical support to scale up treatment with zinc and LO-ORS in countries that have high numbers of children with diarrhoea.
Building on the successes of the first ZACH program in 2011, the partnership strives to improve care-seeking for childhood diarrhoea and zinc and LO-ORS coverage in Kenya, Ethiopia, Senegal and Bangladesh. This project aims to treat more than 44 million episodes of diarrhoea with zinc and LO-ORS and train more than 61,000 health workers in delivering zinc and LO-ORS treatment for diarrhoea.
The Impact
Treating childhood diarrhoea
Through ZACH, more than 40 million cases of childhood diarrhoea have been treated with zinc and LO-ORS, preventing deaths and helping children recover more quickly so they can have a healthier, happier childhood.
