The life-saving potential of kangaroo mother care
Quick and timely intervention is needed to support a newborn born premature or with a low birthweight. Kangaroo mother care—continuous skin-to-skin contact between a baby and its caregiver—is a proven and effective method to support growth and development. Combined with exclusive breastfeeding, proper hygiene and supportive follow-up care at home, it meaningfully reduces the chances of neonatal mortality.
Provinces in Pakistan, with support from Nutrition International, are prioritizing strengthening kangaroo mother care services by working with doctors, nurses, lady health workers, and lady health visitors to support families with this timely intervention when it’s needed. Watch to see the difference kangaroo mother care makes and what it takes to make it reality.
