Factors associated with socio‐demographic characteristics and antenatal care and iron supplement use in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Senegal
Overview
The objective of this study was to identify factors associated with the uptake of antenatal care (ANC) and iron supplementation among women in Afar, Ethiopia; Sedhiou and Kolda, Senegal; and Kakamega, Kenya, in order to improve maternal care programs in these hard-to-reach areas.
Women with children under 12 months from these areas were randomly selected to participate in the baseline survey to determine the impact of socio-demographic characteristics on ANC and iron supplementation.
Findings demonstrated that there are several characteristics of mothers and households that can positively and negatively influence ANC and iron supplement use. These factors, such as education, financial barriers, incentives, and community support, are described in this paper.
