An urgent global crisis

Growing challenges are risking the lives and potential of an entire generation

Around the world, people are facing unprecedented and intersecting challenges that are jeopardizing their health and futures.

Pandemics, conflicts, climate shocks and increasing levels of debt are threatening hard-won development gains, while aid cuts and changes in funding priorities are creating catastrophic aid shortages globally.

Led by the French government, the 2025 Nutrition for Growth Summit (N4G Paris) aims to put nutrition at the heart of sustainable development policies through coordinated action. By generating a coordinated set of new commitments to integrate nutrition across multiple sectors, N4G Paris seeks to make the fight against malnutrition a universal cause that unites stakeholders at the national, regional and global levels.

It’s understandable that people might feel helpless and powerless in the face of the rising storm of conflict and instability in the world, but more than ever, we must remind ourselves that there are reasons for hope. By prioritizing nutrition today, we can build a healthier, more prosperous and more stable tomorrow for everyone — but we have to act now.

The road to N4G Paris

Driving meaningful commitments and collective action

Leading up to N4G Paris, governments across the world have been shaping their commitments and investments in nutrition. As part of this, we have been working with key stakeholders to equip governments with the data and insights they need to drive meaningful action.

In Africa, we have been exploring this crucial question in a series of events across the continent using our Cost of Inaction Tool, which helps policy makers understand how undernutrition impacts national economies and future prosperity.

In Nigeria, a high-level dialogue with the Government of Canada and others underscored the urgent need for increased investment in nutrition to prevent billions of dollars in losses. In Ethiopia, an event with the national government, the Embassy of Canada to Ethiopia and Nutrition International highlighted the benefits of investing in nutrition in Ethiopia, rallying policy makers donors and stakeholders.

Events like these highlight how countries can strengthen their nutrition agendas to tackle stunting, anaemia and low birthweight through proven high-impact, cost-effective interventions that yield long-term economic and health benefits.

In Asia, we have been holding workshops with media, development banks and government officials, helping them understand the economic cost of inaction on nutrition and supporting countries to build an investment case for nutrition.

For instance, through a scoping study of the social safety programs of 12 countries in Asia, followed by government consultations in India, Indonesia, Bangladesh and Pakistan, we are exploring entry points to make social protection interventions more nutrition sensitive. We are also strengthening our engagement with the Asian Development Bank to enhance nutrition financing for the region by mainstreaming nutrition within their investments.

For the N4G Summit, we are mobilizing the governments of Pakistan, Bangladesh, Philippines and Indonesia and supporting them to firm up their nutrition commitments, while also providing them with technical assistance for integrating those commitments within their annual nutrition plans.

On Friday, February 7, Nutrition International hosted a fireside chat and networking lunch at our Ottawa headquarters with Brieuc Pont, France’s Special Envoy on Nutrition, and Leslie Norton, Assistant Deputy Minister at Global Affairs Canada. The event, held in celebration of International Development Week in collaboration with Results Canada, offered a unique opportunity to hear Monsieur Pont share his vision for advancing global nutrition and the need for urgent leadership at the 2025 N4G Summit.

Nutrition International has also been supporting the Government of France to organize a successful 2025 N4G Summit. This includes providing our technical expertise, experience and data to support the day-to-day technical demands of preparing for the Summit.

Reaffirming our collective commitment

Malnutrition is a solvable problem

In an era marked by unprecedented global challenges, malnutrition continues to afflict millions worldwide, with women, children, and marginalized communities bearing the heaviest burden.

Yet, we know what works. Proven, cost-effective interventions exist, and nutrition investments yield extraordinary returns.

In the face of global challenges, N4G Paris offers a critical chance to reaffirm our collective commitment to nutrition. We must seize this opportunity to step up and act decisively to fill the new and significant gaps in aid. We need to make the choice to end malnutrition and then take collective action in a focused, connected way.
