Dr. Amare Deribew is Nutrition International’s Country Director for Ethiopia. As Country Director, he oversees advocacy, planning and program development in the Ethiopia office, as well as program implementation, monitoring and evaluation and financial and human resources management, as part of our efforts to reduce malnutrition and improve maternal and child health in Ethiopia through innovative approaches.
Amare is a medical doctor, a public health specialist and an epidemiologist with more than 14 years experience in leadership, program management and research and publication.
As Program Director at the International Medical Corps (IMC) in Sudan and Sierra Leone, he designed and led the implementation of the Primary Health Care (PHC), Nutrition/Food Security, Health System Strengthening and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) programs. Amare is skilled in project management cycles and complex program management environments and has developed a robust monitoring and evaluation framework to achieve different program objectives.
Amare has a medical degree and a Masters degree in public Health from Jimma University in Ethiopia. He has also a PhD in Medical Science with a focus on HIV and Tuberculosis from Antwerp University in Belgium.
Prior to joining MI, Amare was Program Director at the International Medical Corps in Sudan and Sierra Leone. He worked as an Epidemiologist with Oxford University and with the KEMRI Welcome Trust research program in Kenya. He has also worked as a public health consultant with the World Health Organization and USAID in Ethiopia.
Amare is an active member of the Global Burden of Diseases and Risk factors (GBD) Collaborating Group and has published several academic articles using GBD data.
