Effectiveness of programme approaches to improve the coverage of maternal nutrition interventions in South Asia
Overview
Maternal health and child survival are impacted by a women’s nutritional status before pregnancy, during pregnancy and after the birth of her child. This paper aims to highlight ways to improve maternal nutrition status through program interventions by using examples from Bangladesh, India, Nepal, and Pakistan.
A systematic review of evidence from 2000 to 2017 was conducted to select the studies used for the review.
Levels of barriers were identified that impact maternal nutrition. These include at the individual, household, and health delivery levels. Programs that were successful at improving maternal health and nutrition targeted their interventions at multiple of these levels and had common programme strategies: including, using formative research; receiving client input; utilizing community-based delivery platforms; engaging stakeholders; improving capacity; and, provided access to free supplements.
