Determination of an Acceptable Portion Size of Daal for a Bangladeshi Community-Based Iron Intervention in Adolescent Girls: A Feasibility Study
Widely consumed is daal (lentils) are an ideal vehicle for iron (Fe) fortification. It was critical to determine an acceptable portion size of daal in meals to carry out a subsequent study to assess the efficacy of the fortified lentils in improving iron status of a population. This community-based non-randomized crossover feeding trial was designed to determine the portion size that the adolescent girls in rural Bangladesh could feasibly consume. Results show that 37.5 g of raw lentil in a thick cooking preparation using a local recipe was most acceptable. Results of this research are important for future iron-fortified lentils programing.
